TAKE A CLASS TO LEARN THE THING YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW HOW TO DO

From crochet to salsa dancing and everything in between, we all have something we know will make us happy if we learn how to do it well. Unless you give yourself the opportunity to learn you will never know if that is true. Taking a class in something you are dying to do may help you discover a brand new passion. You will find that many classes offered at your local community college, through city recreation centers or on Groupon.

HAVE A REGULAR “YOU” DAY

Even special celebration days like birthdays and Valentine’s day often end up being more about planning the event to make other people happy than making it about you.  Make yourself happy by randomly picking a day to do whatever you want. Be totally selfish and don’t give a thought to what anyone else will think. Whether it’s sending yourself a huge bouquet of flowers, having a spa day, or spending the entire day in your PJs eating a tub of ice cream, as long as you treat yourself it qualifies as a “ME” day.

VOLUNTEER

Okay, so volunteering does not conjure up images of making yourself feel happy but rather spending hours in community service, taking part in a community street cleaning operation or wearing a fluorescent vest while helping children to safely cross the road. It has been proven that volunteering can make you feel really good about yourself deep down and it can actually be a lot of fun. The trick is to choose a project that involves something you love like cleaning up the environment, working with children or animals, etc. and how your personal skills can best be used to improve situations. Helping someone else by doing something you are good at is one of the best ways to feel happy about yourself.

BE OKAY WITH TAKING DAYS OFF

We have all experienced one of those days when we just feel ‘off’ and we know that everything is going to turn out rotten no matter how hard we try to fight it. When these days come by, give yourself permission once I a while to take the day off and you will find that the next day will look much brighter.

INVEST IN A SOCIAL PROJECT

Check out some of the amazing social projects on sites like Kiva or Kickstarter where you can contribute as little or as much as you like. Watching how your investment evolves into something amazing and knowing that you played a part in it is good for you.

EAT MORE ICE CREAM

Just because eating ice cream always makes us feel better.

ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE CREATIVE

Remember how you drew pictures, made up dances, and wrote stories without inhibition as a child? At some point, while growing up our inner critic starts to convince us that, even though we love being creative, we may not be good enough at it and we push our projects aside or they get waylaid by work and other responsibilities. Allowing yourself time to be creative and artistic without judgment is very good for your soul. So dust off your old notebook put on your dancing shoes, get out those colored pencils and get creative!

SING

Singing out loud is good for the soul too. Even if you think you have a terrible voice (I promise it can’t be worse than mine), sing when you are in the shower, doing the housework, working on your creative project, and definitely belt out your favorite songs while driving. ORDER SOMETHING DIFFERENT

As the saying goes – ‘Variety is the spice of life’! So choose something you have never tried before next time you eat out. After all, you may find a fabulous new favorite dish to tempt your taste buds with.

SAY YES

Keeping your head down and sticking to your familiar routine is an easy way to get through the day. However, you may never know what new opportunities await you if you don’t stick your head out and invite them in. Try spending a whole day saying ‘yes’ to whatever comes up. By accepting and allowing things to flow naturally you open yourself up to exciting new situations. Say ‘yes’ to joining friends or colleagues for happy hour drinks when you usually decline, say ‘yes’ when asked to take on a new project at work, say ‘yes’ to extra whipped cream on your dessert and watch your happiness quotient rise. Actually, you should be doing this every day.

LAUGH

Laughter is the best medicine and can instantly lift your mood. Look for the humor in situations and find opportunities to have a good belly laugh. Whether it’s watching Bridesmaids for the umpteenth time, going to a good comedy show, spending time being silly with your friends, or indulging in things that bring joy and humor into your life anything that’s good for a laugh is good for your soul.
